The genus Habenaria is comprised of mainly
terrestrial orchids with tubers or fleshy roots, often having long
slender spurs and lip lobes. This genus is distributed worldwide with
around 600-800 species. However, only 8 species have been recorded in
Peninsular Malaysia so far and Habenaria kingii is endemic to Peninsular
Malaysia. Its flower has marked similarities with Habenaria
reflexa, another widespread species also found in Peninsular
Malaysia.
Habenaria kingii is a magnificent species
with spectacular inflorescence that can reach up to 50cm long with its leaf length about 12cm.
