classification

Orchids are classified under the family of Orchidaceae, which can be further divided into 6 main sub-families: Apostasioideae, Cypripedioideae,

Neottioideae, Orchidoideae,

Epidendroideae and Vandoideae.

The former sub-families are more ancient and the latter are more modern.

Broadly however, orchids can be categorized as Pleonandrae and Monandrae. Pleonandrae(s) are characterized by having two to three stamens per flower while Monandrae(s) have one stamen per flower.

Pleonandrae(s) consist of Apostasioideae and Cypripedioideae, while Monandrae(s) consist of Neottioideae, Orchidoideae, Epidendroideae and Vandoideae.
